CLAUDE GUÉNARD

Born in France in 1949, Claude Guénard, a graduate of the Fine-Arts School in Paris, is a painter, engraver and sculptor.

Completely committed to everything he undertakes, this artist is well on his way to living the proverbial nine lives.

He took part in boxing matches, competed in judo, hunted in the bush and taught in art schools in Africa for 20 years.

Nicknamed the “cultural mercenary”, he now lives and works in the Paris area.

What’s the problem with the brands playing on sexual imagery?

I don’t have any problem with the erotic connotation. Just the opposite! What bothers me is the hypocrisy.

Apart from that, I want to denounce the decree to consume: the brands create desire with a commercial aim.

Always more, always more quickly. We’re talking about frenetic and blind consumption.

Interview by Olivier Nicklaus, extract from “Les Inrockuptibles”, February 2008

Taking prestige brands like Chanel and shaking their momified images and lack of emotions to show how people feel subconsciously about those brands is quite visionary.

Indeed consumers look at luxury brands from a totally different perspective: with envy, lust, jaleousy, sexual desires and need for self- esteem.

That truth, never told, now has become an art in the eyes of Claude Guenard.

Marc Gobe, President & Editor, Emotional Branding LLC, New York 2008

Sex as a relationship to the other is already a common space.

Sex as a necessity, on one hand, of scandal that the individualism of our world lays claim to is already not as common.

Sex as a refusal to blissfully adhere to a consumerist order is undoubtedly the lesson of Claude Guénard’s art.

It is both a little and a great deal at the same time.
